Smith was on a ship enroute to Europe when it meet the ship returning from Europe with the news that the War was over. William Tillman Smith then elected to return to the United States and he did. He never set foot in a foreign country. He was then discharged on December 11, 1918 at Camp Jackson, South Carolina.
