Will of Redden Cannon

Horry District

In the name of God amen. I Redding Cannon of the state and district afforesaid planter being sick in body but of perfect sound mind and memory, thanks be to God for the same, but calling to mind the mortality of my body, and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die. Do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament that is to say, first I recommend my soul unto the hands of Almighty God that gave it and my body to the earth to be buried in a decent manner and as touching such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with, I dispose of in the following mannner:

First that all my lawful debts be paid.

I give to my beloved wife Sarah Cannon and her six last children namely Henry , Rhody, Redding, Luranah, Elizabeth and James, all my lands and tenaments, and stock of cattle, horses, hogs and sheep. One negro man named John, and all my house hold and kitchen furniture and plantation tools, and all debts due me, after paying all my lawful debts. For her support and the support and education of her six children above named during her widowhood or good behavior her lifetime and at her decease for all the remaining part of my property to be equally divided amongst her six children above named. Except my lands and that the remain undivided until James becomes of age, and should any of the above named children die without lawful issue the their part to be equaly devided between the remaining children above named. Except my Executors should think proper to sell any part of my personal property or dispose of the same for the support of my beloved wife and the above named children.

Lastly I do nominate and appoint my friends John Manning and John Sarvis Executors to this my Last Will and Testament. In witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal this---day of August in the year of our Lord on thousand eight hundred and twenty three and in the forty eighth year of the Independence of the United States of America.
